Exploring the Efficiency of Stone Crusher Plants in India's Construction Industry

India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It is witnessing unprecedented infrastructural growth. This has led to the increased demand for machinery like stone crushers. Stone crushing industry is an important industrial sector in the country engaged in producing crushed stone of various sizes depending upon the requirement which acts as raw material for various construction activities such as construction of roads, highways, bridges, buildings, canals etc. It is estimated that there are over 12,000 stone crusher units in India.

The number is expected to grow further keeping in view the future plans for development of infrastructure of roads, canals and buildings that are required for overall development of the country. In India, the stone crushing industry sector is estimated to have an annual turnover of Rs. 5000 crore (equivalent to over US$ 1 billion) and is therefore an economically important sector. The sector is estimated to be providing direct employment to over 500,000 people engaged in various activities such as mining, crushing plant, transportation of mined stones and crushed products etc.

Stone crushing units are not stand alone crushing units, but stone mining is also associated with this activity; in fact stone mining is the primary and basic activity for the stone crushing units. Therefore this kind of industrial units need scrutiny while granting permission for environmental and mining operations, especially at the time of NOC (i.e. Consent to Establishment) stage. It should be analyzed in totality.

i) Identification of safer zone and also detailed report in respect of existing cluster of stone crushing units is not available. Each stone crusher unit shall install adequate pollution control measures including erection of G.I. Sheets cover and the sprinklers before commencement of operations.

ii) The distance between two stone crusher boundaries shall not be less than 300 meters to avoid clustering of stone crushers in an area if a new stone crusher is being installed. v) The plot area for the stone crusher shall be at least 100 meters by 100 meters (7.5 Bighas).

At present, there are about 15 to 20 stone crushing units in and around Guwahati and a few units around other towns. The capacity of a stone crusher unit depends on the feed size of stone, the desired product size and the size of crusher used. Following are the generally required machinery.

Jaw crusher and granulator

Conversion kit for converting crushed stone granules

Set of hoppers for manual breaking

Rotary screen completes with all fittings

Trollies for carrying crushed material

Belt conveyor with motor

Cyclonic dust collector with motor

Spare jaws, jigs, fixtures, and tools

Stone crushing industry is an important industrial sector in producing crushed stone which is raw material for various construction activities like construction of roads, highways, bridges, buildings, canals, etc. Transportation of stone over long distances adds to cost of the crushed stone products, crushers need to be necessarily located nearer to the demand centers such as the cities, bridges, buildings etc. Stone Crushers Associations/ Stone Crushers unit representatives etc.

During a recent study conducted by the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), it was revealed that the stone crushing industry has been playing a major role in supporting the national economy. The efficiency of stone crusher plants has been discussed with various stakeholders, including industry bodies, governmental agencies, and environmental experts.

The conclusion reached by the study is that the efficiency of stone crusher plants varies significantly depending on the location and geography of the region. Factors such as the location of the crusher plants, the quarrying methods, the extraction process, the availability of raw materials, and the logistics of transporting the materials all contribute to the efficiency of stone crusher plants.

It has been observed that stone crusher plants located in the high mountains and hilly regions experience difficulty in transporting the materials due to rugged terrains. This leads to increased transportation costs, longer delivery times, and potential damage to the materials. On the other hand, stone crusher plants located in flat areas or near major cities and towns experience greater efficiency due to easier access to raw materials and transportation networks.

In order to improve the overall efficiency of stone crusher plants, it is essential to establish centralized facilities in key locations to reduce transportation costs, automate the extraction process, and implement modern technologies for crushing and screening of stone materials. Additionally, the industry should focus on sustainable quarrying practices, ensuring minimal environmental impact and maximizing resource utilization.

In conclusion, the efficiency of stone crusher plants in India's construction industry is a major concern for all stakeholders, including industry bodies, governmental agencies, and environmental experts. This must be addressed for sustainable development and growth of the construction industry in the country.
